Winter Territoriality of the American Redstart in Oil Palm Plantations

چکیده

Aspects of territorial behavior Nearctic-neotropical migratory birds during the nonbreeding period are poorly studied. Information about territoriality, site persistence, between-year fidelity, and territory sizes not available for most birds, especially in tropical agroecosystems. Given rapid expansion oil palm neotropics, determining how affects behaviors overwintering is an important line inquiry with conservation implications. The American Redstart (Setophaga ruticilla) considered a model species study population dynamics neotropics; however, size has only been assessed native habitats. In this study, we outfitted individual redstarts radio tags, across two winter seasons, to determine variation plantations forest patches State Tabasco, Mexico. Average redstart was 0.29 ha 0.17 forest. Albeit presenting larger territories plantations, which could indicate poorer habitat quality, difference between both habitats statistically significant. Our results demonstrate, first time, that Redstarts hold may serve as indicator relative quality populations working landscapes.

Palm oil production through sustainable plantations

The Malaysian oil palm industry is one of the most highly organised sectors of any national agriculture system of the world. Today, though, the focus has shifted to how well agriculture also meets universally accepted standards of sustainability. This paper highlights the development of oil palm cultivation and responsible farming practices in Malaysia, the world’s largest producer of palm oil....

Carbon emissions from forest conversion by Kalimantan oil palm plantations

Oil palm supplies >30% of world vegetable oil production1. Plantation expansion is occurring throughout the tropics, predominantly in Indonesia, where forests with heterogeneous carbon stocks undergo high conversion rates2–4. Quantifying oil palm’s contribution to global carbon budgets therefore requires refined spatio-temporal assessments of land cover converted to plantations5,6. Here, we rep...

Status of Rat Infestation and Recent Control Strategies in Oil Palm Plantations in Peninsular Malaysia

A survey was carried out to establish the status of rat infestation and recent rat control practices in oil palm plantations in Peninsular Malaysia. Rattus tiomanicus (Miller) constitutes a major rat species (68%), followed by Rattus argentiventer (Robinson and Kloss), (46%) and Rattus rattus diardii (L.), (28%). Although 75% of estates did not consider rats as a serious problem, the damage est...

Age-specific differences in habitat selection by the American Redstart.-

Age-specific differences in habitat selection by the American Redstart. The American Redstart (Setophaga ruticilla) is unusual among parulids because males retain immature plumage until after the first breeding season. On the basis of this character, age-specific differences in habitat occupation have been reported (Ficken and Ficken 1967, Wilson Bull. 79: 188). In 1969 I sampled some redstart h...
